Here are some highlights from my interview with Bryan, who made a quick trip to California to help out his friend Paula Abdul as one of the judges of the Uplive worldwide competition. I was honored to sit down with Bryan for a candid 1:1 for him to share an important story that can save lives, especially from a Hollywood that can easily swoop in and take over. His was a rough journey involving alcoholism but his subsequent sobriety eventually unlocked the deepest of wisdom captured in this interview. From the excesses of Guns N’ Roses “November Rain” music video to the tragic ending that took Whitney Houston’s life, the early 90’s were a yin and yang of the biggest peaks and the most precipitous falls. With 3 #1 hits on pop and R&B, the bilingual “I Adore Mi Amor”, “All 4 Love” and their breakthrough “I Wanna Sex You Up”, the Oklahoma natives became worldwide sensations. A multicultural group combining old school soulful harmonies with upbeat dance and funk, the moment met its time with the rise of new jack swing. After years of tenacious networking and paying their dues in the 80s, Color Me Badd’s unique style finally hit in the early 90’s, paving the way for soulful boy band pop. In 2011, they reformed as a trio, sans Sam Watters, who is now a successful songwriter and producer.Very few reach the pinnacle of achievement like Bryan Abrams did in 1991. The original members of Color Me Badd officially disbanded in November 1998, culminating in the release of their best of set,The Best of Color Me Badd. ![]() "Remember When" achieved minor success on radio and has a companion video shot as well. ![]() Remaining true to their R&B roots, they again received critical acclaim for their vocal harmonies. #21.Īfter moving to Epic Records, Color Me Badd's fifth album, Awakening, was released in July 1998. The album produced one major hit single, "The Earth, The Sun, The Rain," which peaked at U.S. However, once again, sales were well below those expected from the group at around 4,000 sales in the U.S. The group re-emerged in 1996 with their fourth album called Now and Forever. The album's title track "Time & Chance" peaked at U.S.#23, while its follow-up "Choose" also topped out at U.S.#23. With the music industry at the time embracing groups such as Nirvana, Guns N' Roses and Pearl Jam, it was difficult for Color Me Badd to deliver the same success on the singles charts as they had done before. Working with top producers including David Foster, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, a more soulful and funky sound had clearly emerged.Īlthough some critics gave it positive reviews, the album did not fare well on the Billboard Album Charts, eventually peaking at #56. A hugely ambitious project, consisting of nineteen new tracks, this album represented a slight shift in musical style for Color Me Badd. The group's third album Time & Chance was released in November 1993. However, the album peaked at U.S.#189, which was the first hint of the bubble bursting. It contained the hit single "Forever Love" (U.S.#15), which was also featured on the Mo' Money soundtrack. ![]() The group released a remix album in October 1992, titled Young, Gifted and Badd. March 1992 also saw Color Me Badd win the Best R&B / Soul Single, and Song Of The Year, categories at the sixth annual Soul Train Music Awards. In January 1992, they were awarded the Favourite Single, Soul/R&B trophy at the 19th annual American Music Awards, held at the Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles. was released in September 1991, eventually selling over 6 million copies worldwide, and being certified 3x platinum in the United States by the RIAA.Ĭolor Me Badd performed at the 1991 Smash Hits Poll Winners Awards in the UK, winning the Best New Group trophy.
